On 5 March 2025, the Biodiversity Science and Policy Advice (BSPA) Branch hosted a dynamic symposium in Cape Town and Pretoria, uniting colleagues under the theme “Thriving People in Nature.” The event was a celebration of collaboration, reflection, and the shared goal of integrating biodiversity into the heart of decision-making.
A Day of Collaboration and Insight

The symposium offered a space for staff to explore how their work contributes to both biodiversity protection and human well-being. Opening remarks emphasized the power of collaboration in embedding biodiversity into policy frameworks and real-world decisions.
Attendees took part in a range of interactive sessions, designed to spark dialogue and cross-disciplinary thinking. In the Biodiversity Connections activity, staff explored how different roles within the organisation are interlinked. The Thriving People and Nature session encouraged participants to connect scientific knowledge with community impact.
Real Challenges, Real Solutions

One of the day’s highlights was the Scenario Challenge, where teams worked through realistic case studies. The goal: find effective ways to balance conservation priorities with development needs. The exercise sparked thoughtful debates and highlighted the importance of innovation and teamwork in responding to environmental pressures.
Key Reflections and Questions
Throughout the event, several guiding questions shaped the conversations:
- How can biodiversity be placed at the centre of decision-making?
- How can scientific work create visible, positive impact?
- How can teams collaborate more effectively across disciplines?
The day ended with a Closing Reflections session, where attendees shared takeaways and personal commitments to advancing biodiversity efforts within SANBA.
Moving Forward with Purpose

More than just a learning experience, the BSPA Symposium reaffirmed the power of shared vision and internal collaboration. It showcased the passion and expertise driving SANBA’s mission forward. With renewed purpose and connection, participants left the event inspired to champion a future where people and nature thrive—together.
