New Membership Options Make Access to SANBA Gardens More Inclusive and Affordable

Accessing South Africa’s most breathtaking green spaces is now more affordable, thanks to newly introduced membership options from the South African National Biodiversity Authority (SANBA). As of March 2025, SANBA has expanded its national gardens membership to include couples, families, and pensioners, making it easier for more people to enjoy the country’s rich natural heritage.

The national SANBA Gardens Membership, first launched in April 2024, provides unlimited access to 11 national botanical gardens and two zoological gardens across eight provinces. With the updated structure, visitors can now choose from a range of packages designed to suit their lifestyle—whether they’re visiting alone, as a couple, with children, or as senior citizens.

Memberships are available at national or regional levels, allowing individuals to choose full access to all gardens or just the ones in their area. Each package supports SANBA’s ongoing conservation work, helping to protect biodiversity, promote environmental education, and keep these spaces thriving for future generations.

Additional benefits include free entry for young children, Tuesday discounts for pensioners, and exclusive savings at partner outlets such as the Kirstenbosch Gift Shop and Happy by Nature Nursery.

“A SANBA Gardens Membership offers more than just entry to these spaces—it’s a meaningful investment in conservation, learning, and community wellness,”

says Nontsikelelo Mpulo, Director of Marketing, Communication and Commercialisation at SANBA.

Every membership supports the care and maintenance of the gardens and helps fund the efforts of more than 600 dedicated staff who work to preserve these living ecosystems. These spaces are not only places of beauty and biodiversity—they also contribute to the mental, physical, and social well-being of the communities they serve.
