Catalyse

“The power of a bold idea uttered publicly in defiance of dominant opinion cannot be easily measured. Those special people who speak out in such a way as to shake up not only the self-assurance of their enemies, but the complacency of their friends, are precious catalysts for change.”

– Howard Zinn, historian, author, playwright, and social activist.

SANBA aims to act as a catalyst for change in moving South Africa towards the use of Distributed Ledger and Blockchain technologies. The aim is to help drive proof-of-concept blockchain concepts (beyond the current focus of cryptocurrencies in the Fintech space), to show the value that can be added by having a trusted, immutable record of transactions and to move swiftly towards implementation of the technology

Project Khokha

Project Khokha was a collaborative project led by the SARB and involving a consortium of South African settlement banks as well as technical and support partners. The goal of the project was to build a proof-of-concept (PoC) wholesale payment system for interbank settlement using a tokenised South African rand on distributed ledger technology (DLT). The project commenced in January 2018 and ran for 14 weeks. The results show that the typical daily volume of the South African payments system could be processed in less than two hours with full confidentiality of transactions and settlement finality. The SARB was able to view the detail of all the transactions to allow for regulatory oversight. This project has laid the foundations for future collaborative work – essential in the blockchain context – and has fulfilled its objective of providing useful insights to all participants.
